June is busting out all over!

Northgate Free Outdoor Movies
Started last week, but still many wonderful family films ahead including Finding Nemo (June 9), Independence Day (June 16), Star Wars - The Force Awakens (June 23), continuing weekly through July 28 when they will show Grease. 
Lots of great food available at the Mall.  Be sure to bring your own seats or blanket and bug spray!  Movies begin approximately 8:30 pm. Movies on the Plaza!


Juneteenth - Durham's 12th annual celebration 
June 18 on East Main Street and throughout Durham
From 1 pm - 10pm., this is a family oriented, multi-racial event celebrating African American Independence Day.  There will be exhibits, games, health fair, food and music.
Lots of fun and educational, too!

Sunday, June 19th, for your dad or anyone! 50+ food trucks, local craft beer and live music. Listen to the West African dance band, Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba from 12:30-3:15! 

Rock the Park Concerts  
Presented by Durham Parks and Rec, start off the summer on June 11 in Duke Park, (106 W. Knox Street) from 6-8 pm,  with the cool sounds of David Gerald, Blues, Jazz and Rock.

Doughman Challenge 2016

What is the Doughman Challenge?  
Doughman 8 will take place on May 27 and consists of lots of exercise and food!  This 4 leg run, bike, run,  swim/ run is interspersed with food, sponsored by local restaurants.  All proceeds benefit a local non-profit.  So typical of the cool stuff happening in Durham.  Look here to sign up.

Duke Performances presents Music in the Gardens starting June 1 and continuing through July 27.  An incredible variety of classical to county, all in the gorgeous Sarah Duke Gardens.

American Tobacco Campus will start up their Music on the Lawn  2016 free series  First concert will be on June 2 and you can continue with great music through September 8

It's time for the Beaver Queen Pageant  on June 4
at Duke Park meadow.  A parade, food, music and a contest.  Check out the website for the info and meet the contestants!

Durham's annual Greek Festival on June 4/5,  from 11 am to 9 pm, rain or shine,  complete with food, music and cultural events.  Eat there or take some home. Here's the link.

Not only is Durham's North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics a top performing state high school, but they offer us the arts, too.  Friday, Saturday, Sunday, May 13, 14, 15 they have a FREE admission to Shakespeare's Twelfth Night or What You Will This lively farce will delight you, as they offer a contemporary take, addressing transgender issues now so important in our state.  Come support these students as they lead the way into our future.

Blues on the Plaza

Northgate Plaza is offering a new program  Blues on the Plaza on Fridays 6:30-9 pm.  It started April 29, but be sure to consider Fridays throughout May, with Beauty Operators on May 6 and coming up - Reverend Dan & the Prohpets, Handsome Al & the Lookers and Mel Melton & the Wicked Mojos.

Moog Fest is coming to Durham.  Don't miss it - May 19-22  Check out the link here and get information on the band list and tickets. There is a HUGE lineup with something for everyone!  Previously based in Asheville, this biennial music fest is another feather in Durham's cap!!

NCCU has asked U.S. Senator Cory Booker to serve as the Keynote speaker at their 127th Baccalaureate graduation on Saturday May 14th.  Senator Booker serves on many Senate committees and is a leader in our nation demanding "common sense" with judicial reform.

Sure, we've still got some cool mornings, but it's spring now.  Our annual documentary festival Full Frame-  this is the link for all the information - started showings docs on Thursday April 7 and runs through Sunday April 10.  The Durham Bulls had opening day on April 7th and continue games at home through April 13th. Durham Parks and Recreation Department sponsors Durham's Earth Day Festival on Saturday April 23 from noon - 5 pm at Rock Quarry Park.  You can bring things for recycling,  listen to lots of music, take a yoga class and join in the parade.

Preservation Durham is presenting the 20th annual  
April 23-24  12-4 pm.   About ten homes throughout Durham will be available for a tour.  Tickets are available.  
Festivities will commence a few days beforehand, April 20, with a lecture by Myrick Howard, Executive Director of Preservation North Carolina.

Durham Roots Farmers' Market

A new Farmers' Market - Durham Roots - will be opening on Saturday, April 16th.  The hours will be 8 am - noon.  They will be offering produce from vendors farming in Durham County.  Talk about Local!!   Along with produce, you'll find eggs, meat, plants, berries and vegetables - something for all tastes.  Located near Northgate Mall at 1058 W. Club Blvd.  Come on over and check it out.

Museum of Life + Science

The Museum of Life + Science will have a Dino Egg Hunt Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 25, 26 and 27th.   Dig for colorful eggs, put together the dinosaur skeleton puzzles, do a fossil rubbing!!  Weather will warm for this family-friendly outdoor activity.  Hunters need to register early, so visit the website here.

Durham Bulls

 The Durham Bulls host opening day on Thursday, April 7 against Charlotte. Enjoy a whole week of home games, but before that, on Saturday March 12 from 8:30 - 10 am., come down to the Athletic Park and tryout to be a 2016 season National Anthem Performer.  It's first-come, first-served.  You will have 90 seconds to sing the anthem and memorize those lyrics before you show up!  Winners will be notified at a later date.  Call 919-956-BULL with questions and ask about the ticket packages.

Durham Crop Hunger Walk

 The 42nd Annual Durham Crop Hunger Walk takes place on Sunday March 20.  Volunteer, donate, get a t-shirt and/or do the walk - all in a great cause to raise money for Urban Ministries, Genesis Home, Meals on Wheels - and many many more.  The walk begins and ends at Duke Chapel and is just under 5 miles.  Check out this link to get your questions answered and find out where to sign up.  This is a long-standing, fabulous money-raiser for worthy organizations here in Durham and around the country.
