Enjoying Durham

Juggling work and leisure time is a challenge for everyone these days. When you discover all that a vibrant city like Durham has to offer, however, you may decide that it is time to add some fun to your agenda. Downtown Durham has some terrific performing arts venues: the Durham Performing Arts Center (dpacnc.com), the recently renovated Carolina Theatre (carolinatheatre.org), and the Manbites Dog Theater (manbitesdogtheater.org). There is not enough space here to mention all of Durham’s celebrated restaurants, but you can check out the Durham Visitors Guide at www.dcvb-nc.com for a full list.

Even Durham’s innkeepers are able to sneak out once in a while, juggling their 24/7 responsibilities of welcoming guests, preparing yummy breakfasts, keeping their inns immaculately clean and safe, and providing the personal service that is their trademark. If they can do it, so can you! They can even help with your plans. Consider extending your visit with an overnight or weekend stay at one of the Inns of Durham (innsofdurham.com). Within a few minutes, you can end your evening by snuggling into a comfortable bed and looking forward to waking up to a leisurely breakfast with some stimulating conversation on the side.

The DPAC's Broadway Series will begin in September with "Come Fly Away," Tony Award winner Twyla Tharp's celebration of the music of Frank Sinatra. Great entertainment, dinner at one of Durham's award winning restaurants, and a night (or two) at one of the Inns of Durham. Don't wait for a special occasion, create one today!

American Dance Festival

One of the things that makes Durham so great is its line-up of annual festivals - food, art, culture, music, beer, film, and dance. During  the next two months, Durham will be hosting one of these extraordinary events, The American Dance Festival. This modern dance festival spans a six-week period, from its Gala Party on June 9th through its last performance on July 23rd. Twenty (20) dance companies will be showcased, including Pilobolus, Paul Taylor, Martha Clarke, and Durham’s own African American Dance Ensemble. The festival’s 47 performances will be held at the Durham Performing Arts Center and Duke’s Reynolds Industries Theater. Tickets are on sale now. Prices range from $25 to $50, with lots of opportunities for discounts. Scheduling and ticketing information can be found at www.americandancefestival.org. Take advantage of this opportunity to  enhance your evening of entertainment with a stay at one of Durham’s bed and breakfasts (www.innsofdurham.com). We might not be professional dancers, but as innkeepers, we always choreograph the best hospitality in Durham!
